Red Cross Offers Cold Weather Health and Safety Tips
"Friday, October 20, 2006 — Fewer than 100,000 homes and
businesses in Western New York remain without power today one week
after a storm dumped nearly two feet of snow on the region. For the
tens of thousands still without power, the lack of electricity coupled
with the unexpected early winter-like weather makes for a potentially
dangerous combination.
The storm brought Buffalo its two snowiest October days on record and
knocked out power for more than 400,000 homes and businesses. According
to the Associated press, 12 reported deaths have been attributed to
record-breaking storm as well as many injuries, such as hypothermia and
carbon monoxide poisoning from improperly vented generators and gas
stoves used for heat. While cool weather continue in many parts of the
country and winter approaches, the American Red Cross offers the
following winter health and safety tips to cope with frigid weather. "
